Enacted by the State Government of Sikkim in September 2022, the Act provides the legal authority, framework, and guiding principles for the university’s creation, administration, and governance.

Legal Status and Recognition

The Act was duly notified and published in the official Gazette of Sikkim in September 2022. It authorizes Mahatma Gandhi University, Sikkim:

1. To function as an autonomous and self-governing State University.
2. To initiate statutory correspondence with the University Grants Commission (UGC) for official recognition and inclusion under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.
3. To ensure alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and government norms.
